Headstone Cleaning

Gentle, Guideline-Cleans that Let the Stone Breathe

Weathering, lichen and staining soften a memorial’s lettering and dull its surface over the years. Vanessa’s method restores appearance carefully — and, importantly, protects the stone for the years ahead.

The Method

How We Clean a Headstone

Cleaning is carried out with safe, effective biodegradable products recommended for all types of headstone — a light clean accompanies every tending visit (dependent on the stone’s condition), while a full deep clean is available as an additional service.

Products work on site with respect and care, and keep working gently with the elements afterwards to maintain and further improve the condition of the stone.

Why We Never Use Mechanical Methods

Pressure washers and abrasive tools can etch soft stone, damage carved detail and force water into the surface — speed bought at the cost of the memorial. Goldfinch’s approach is deliberately traditional: appropriate solutions, soft brushes and patience.

The environmentally-safe products used restore appearance considerably while protecting the surface beneath. This is stewardship, not scrubbing.

Consideration for Every Material

Each stone responds differently. Marble and Portland limestone are softer and more porous; granite is harder but shows every scratch if treated roughly. Vanessa adjusts product, dwell time and technique to the material — and will always tell you honestly what can and cannot be achieved if a stone is beyond gentle restoration.

  • Marble — brightening of softened lettering and surfaces
  • Granite — staining and organic marks lifted without scratching
  • Portland stone — careful treatment for weathered, carved memorials
  • Cast & bronze ornament — cleaned on site within visits

Good Practice

Care, Preservation & Compliance

All work adheres to the COSHH (2002) regulations and is covered by full industry public liability insurance. Cleaning is always carried out within local authority cemetery and Diocese guidelines, and the approach follows guidance familiar to churchyard conservation, including the Wildlife Trust’s Churchyard Conservation Scheme.

Because many churchyards are living habitats, everything removed is taken off-site and composted or recycled as standard — no plastic, no cellophane, no residue.
