Grave Tending
Care for Their Resting Place, Ongoing or Just Once
One-off visits, regular maintenance, tidy-up services and cremation plot care — carried out personally and quietly, with photographic confirmation of every visit.

What Grave Tending Involves
“Tending” simply means looking after a memorial the way a conscientious family member would — with patience, a steady hand and genuine care. A typical visit tidies the whole plot, cleans what can safely be cleaned, refreshes what needs refreshing and leaves the grave dignified and presentable.
Work is always carried out in accordance with Diocese and local cemetery and churchyard regulations, and to guidelines from the Wildlife Trust’s Churchyard Conservation Scheme.
What a typical visit includes
- Removal of decayed arrangements, weeds, debris & litter
- Grass and turf trimmed back
- Decorative aggregate tidied
- Vases & ornaments cleaned on site
- Light clean of the headstone (as condition allows)
- A posy of fresh flowers left on the day
- Your personal message, if you wish
- Before-and-after photos sent by post or email

One-Off Grave Visits
Many families need only a single visit — before a funeral anniversary, ahead of a family’s own long-planned visit, or simply when the grave has become overgrown and distressing to think about.
A one-off tending clears away the winter’s decay, tidies the plot end to end and leaves fresh flowers with your message. You’ll receive before-and-after photographs, however far you are.
Arrange a One-Off Visit
Regular Maintenance
Choose several visits spread evenly through the year, or a planned schedule built around the dates that matter — Birthdays, Anniversaries, Mothering Sunday, Easter, Father’s Day and Christmas time.
Regular care keeps small problems small: grass trimmed before it seeds, aggregates tidy, drainage clear, vases fresh. Each visit follows the same quiet rhythm, and each one is photographed for you.

Tidy-Up-Only Service
If you prefer to take your own flowers and plants when you visit — and many families do — Vanessa can provide a tidy-up only service: cut back overgrown grass, turf, weeds and shrubs; remove previous arrangements and debris off-site; clean ornaments and vases ready for your own visit.
It pairs well with a scheduled tending visit in between your own journeys.

Cremation Plot Care
Cremation plots and memorial lawns need gentler attention, not less. The same principles apply — clearing, cleaning and a touching tribute — worked carefully around the smaller headstones and shared ground typical of these spaces.

Pricing
Grave Tending Visits from £35
Every quotation is personal and free from obligation. Vanessa will talk through what your loved one’s resting place needs — often from a photograph — and give you a clear, written price.
What shapes the price
- Location of the cemetery or churchyard
- Condition and size of the grave
- One-off or scheduled visits
- Floral arrangements and tributes
- Any additional headstone cleaning
Replacement vases from £10.00 when needed.
Do I need to be there when the visit takes place?
No — that’s rather the point. Most families arranging visits are hundreds of miles away or find the journey difficult. Vanessa works quietly within cemetery and churchyard regulations, and photographs let you share the moment from wherever you are.
Can the flowers match a particular colour?
Yes. Vanessa buys from local florists, nurseries and markets and will happily work to a favourite flower or colour, a seasonal theme, or a simple, thoughtful posy instead.
How much does a tending visit cost?
Prices for visits start from £35.00. Your quotation depends on location, condition and what you would like done — discussed without obligation.
